The Minibus Association of Malawi (MAM) has failed to finish construction of an up to date bus terminal at Mibawa in Blantyre, delaying a multi-million Kwacha project projected to have ended earlier this year.
MAM challenged government to accord it a place, promising to construct a modern bus terminal at Mibawa. But, three years after making the promise, there is little more to show at Mibawa than mounds of dust.
Coxley Kamange, MAM Publicity Secretary, maintained, however, that the association will construct a modern facility at Mibawa.
“Of course, there have been some delays but our offer still stands. That is why we have constructed, at least, four concrete stands that only need sheltering. We plan to finish the project after the rains,” said Kamange.
The delays have irked some MAM members, who accuse the secretariat of playing seek and hide.
“Why has it taken so long to finish construction when our (members) contributions reached K60 million by June this year? We are very worried because of lack of transparency,” said Michael Chunga, a member of the association.
But Kamange promised to provide a comprehensive audit report for the members, hoping this would erase fears of lack of transparency.
