Effective Integrated Search Strategy Delivers Better Public Services - Free White Paper
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The explosion in the availability of online information combined with the need to seamlessly access content across a mixture of internal and online resources has left many government and public sector organisations struggling to deliver a truly integrated search strategy. The resultant frustration of users is evident, especially when they are presented with an expanding array of resources each of which has their own unique approach to solving often complex search requirements. Ever changing legislation compliance issues, FOI requests, National Indicator requirements, the drive toward 24/7 web self-service and shared services simply add to the pressure on existing services and resources.
In an economic climate where Government budgets are stretched and IT projects are considered to be high cost and potentially high risk it is refreshing to see that effective solutions can still be delivered, facilitating specific and targeted searching across all essential information resources.
An example of one recent initiative is Wastenet, supported by DEFRA it is a free online resource for the research community providing easy and centralised access to relevant and up-to-date information about waste and resources research.

GOVERNMENT OVERSEAS AID IS NO BAR TO INDIVIDUAL GIVING
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Greater government aid to overseas development charities does not discourage individual giving, according to new research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Fears that increasing government grants would serve to ‘crowd out’ donations from individuals are unwarranted. If anything, say researchers, the opposite is the case, with greater government grants to development charities appearing to encourage individual donors to give more.
