Bicycle ambulances on high demand

Bicycle ambulances, touted for reducing maternal and morbidity death rates, are on highdemand in Malawi.

The Calista Mutharika Foundation for Safe Motherhood is the latest charity organisation to appreciate the role of such ambulances. The First Lady-owned charity purchased 25 bicycle ambulances from Sakaramenta.

The handover ceremony took place on World AIDS Day, a decision Mutharika described as tactical.

After all, she said, the death of women due to birth complications was as serious as HIV and AIDS, and deserved equal attention.
