Evangelist Joyce Meyer finished her tour of Malawi Sunday, ending with a touching sermon that implored Malawian men to help their wives in everyday chores as well as detailing her childhood days when her father often abused her sexually.
Meyer, a well-known and highly respected preacher and teacher of the word of God, was in town to hold special Christian meetings dubbed ‘Festival of Life’ in collaboration with Malawian churches.
The meetings begun Friday and ended Sunday in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre.
However, her tour was not without early drama. Her private jet could not land after 6pm due to the absence of runway lights at Chileka International Airport.
Other international flights have suffered this fate before, as runway lights at the biggest airport in Southern Malawi continue to be regarded as luxury. Those who choose to land at Chileka, the airport used by first president Dr. Kamuzu Banda on his pre-independence return to Malawi, do so at their own risk.
Meyer seemed to have put the incident fast behind her memory, and went on to teach locals on the theories of the heavens and practicals of life.
In the end, she talked about psychological pain and sexual abuse.
“I know how it feels, I know,” she said. “My own childhood was troubled; my own father used to sexually-abuse me that often, that I really lost any aorta of confidence. God is great because, somehow, I managed to overcome this and here I am,” said Meyer.
She said the painful part of sexual abuses she suffered was that her mother knew what was happening, but could do nothing under the circumstances to help her.
“We can overcome these things, having faith in God,” said Meyer.
She then took on Malawian men, faulting them for idleness.
“You have the responsibility to help your wives. Someone was asking me why is it that, when we went around, we saw only women working- some carrying children and hoes- and the men were mostly sitting down hands akimbo? No, we can do better and help each other,” she said.
Apostle Madalitso Mbewe, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Festival of Life, Meyer’s visit was a blessing.
“Our nation stands to get many blessings through the church leaders who have been trained in various aspects of religion,” said Mbewe.
