How to Pick the Perfect Valentine's Day Gift

It is that time of year where LOVE is in the air! Make sure you remember the special loved one's in your life this February 14th.

First make sure you know what that special person is "in to". Giving someone a gift that does not fit their personality, will likely not gain any brownie points for you. Discover their hobbies, and find out if they like jewelry, candy, etc.

Step 2Next, shop around. Don't buy the first gift you see. This time of year there are several flower shops that offer discounts, as well as jewelry shops, etc. If you know their hobby is important to them, maybe get them a gift they can "use".

Step 3Make sure you visit online coupon sites for discounts you can either print or enter a code to use. There are several such as retailmenot.com and gblpridejewelry.com. Try to make the gift as personal as possible. This shows you really have put some thought into what makes that special person HAPPY!

How to Pick the Perfect Valentine's Day Gift for Him

Most men will not profess their interest in Valentine's Day other than knowing that they are expected to recognize their valentine on the day with gifts and attention. Surprise the man in your life on Valentine's Day with gifts of his own.

Give him a free pass to hang out with the guys on the weekend at the sports bar. Better yet, offer to be the designated driver for all of the guys at the end of the night so they can enjoy a few drinks while watching the game and still get home safely.

Step 2Buy a gift certificate for him to enjoy a favorite sport. If he enjoys golf, get a gift certificate for greens fees at his favorite course. If he loves to shoot, buy a few hours of time at the gun range.

Step 3Make a date night at home by preparing his favorite meal and watching a movie from his favorite genre. You can rent a movie from or buy a movie you know he would like and make it part of his Valentine's Day gift.

Step 4Create a love coupon book for him. On each coupon, write something he would enjoy from a back massage to a foot rub to something more risqué. Allow him to turn in as many coupons as he would like on Valentine's Day to make his night.

10 Valentine's Day Gifts for Him

Typically, many people perceive Valentine's Day gifts as overly sentimental and syrupy sweet. When you're buying for a man, however, sappy and sentimental may not always be the best choice. Luckily, there are plenty of options that don't involve flowers and chocolates in heart-shaped containers.

Memorabilia
Whether he collects baseball cards or Star Wars action figures, buying a piece of memorabilia to add to his collection will make him light up like a little boy. Do a little research and see which figure, card or other collectible he's been eyeing. Then, scope out the collectible shops and auction sites to find just the right collectible at the right price.
Camping Equipment
Present him with a set of new camping equipment ranging from canteens to tents, if your budget permits. If you're unsure of what items he already owns, consider buying a gift card to an outdoor sports store so he can choose his own items.
Video Games or Accessories
For the gamer in your life, buy the latest hot video game title. Nothing says romance like acceptance of his geekiest hobbies.
His Favorite Films on DVD or Blu-Ray
Whether he loves action films, dramatic independents or gory horror films, give him a few of his favorite films on DVD or Blu-Ray. A gift of his favorite films tells him that you not only love him, but you listen to him when he's droning on about vintage versus present-day Sam Raimi films.
Home-Cooked Meal
You've no doubt heard the saying, "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach." Test the theory by preparing a home-cooked meal for Valentine's Day. Create a feast featuring his favorite entrees and desserts. Add candlelight and wine to make the meal more romantic.
Tickets to a Sporting Event
Not all men love sports, but those who do will appreciate tickets to a favorite team's game. While you may not be able to spring for the best seats in the house, he will appreciate the gesture and enjoy sharing his love for sports with you.
An Adventure
Enlist the help of a service that provides customers with "adventure experiences." From hot air balloon rides to Nascar racing experiences, purchase a gift certificate that will allow him to take part in a boyhood fantasy.
Electronics
You've probably seen him admire the latest GPS model or iPod as he roams the aisles of his favorite electronics store. Surprise him with a gift that will really knock his socks off by giving him the item he's been longing for.
Watch or Timepiece
A watch or timepiece, such as a pocket watch, is an elegant gift that will become a sentimental keepsake in the years to come.
Cuff Links
For a partner who regularly wears button-up dress shirts to work or functions, select a pair of cuff links that will match his style. You can even purchase secret message cuff links that allow you to store a message inside a tiny barrel placed on top of the link.

How to buy cheap Valentine's Day gifts for him

For many women it is important to buy a gift for their husbands or boyfriends even when they have very little money. Instead of spending over your budget, purchase cheap Valentine's gifts for him.

Look at his hobbies for ideas on cheap Valentine's gifts for him. If your man is a fisherman then look for fishing line or hooks you could purchase. A sports enthusiast may enjoy a football to throw around with you.

Step 2Take a peak at his bath accessories for cheap Valentine's gifts for him. He may use a special shaving cream or body spray that you could turn into a gift basket.

Step 3Search www.ebay.com for cheap Valentine's gifts for him. You may be able to find the video game he has been looking for or the barbecue set he cannot wait to use for a very inexpensive price.

Step 4Look for ten dollar magazine subscriptions that he would enjoy. Not only are these inexpensive but they are also a gift that he will get more than once.

How to celebrate a cheap Valentines Day

Consider celebrating Valentine's Day the day after. Gifts, flowers, and chocolates can all be found at a deep discount. Also, the restaurants will not be as packed.

Step 2
Instead of going to a restaurant, enjoy a nice dinner at home. You can often get expensive ingredients, such as lobster and steak, for less than the cost of going out.

Step 3Call into your local radio station to request "your" song. Then ask your loved one to dance!

Step 4
Write sweet notes and leave them around the house where your other half will find them. You could also hide small presents, or even do a scavenger hunt.

Step 5Have a frugal gift challenge. See who can find the most romantic gift for under $10 each. Try making CDs of his favorite music, or a thrift store knick-knack that may remind her of you.

Step 6
If you have children, consider having them make their own Valentine's Day cards.

Step 7Consider celebrating Valentine's Day the day after. Gifts, flowers, and chocolates can all be found at a deep discount. Also, the restaurants will not be as packed.

How to Save Money on Valentine's Day

Offer to make a romantic dinner for Valentine's Day. You can make a nice Italian meal like spaghetti and meatballs fairly easily, and to really put it over the top you can make some cookies or cake for dessert. Get a nice glass of wine and one red rose and your entire night is set! It sure beats the hell out of paying over a hundred dollars on a dozen roses, plus this idea is definitely more personable and less commercial.

Step 2Go for a short get-away. Spend the afternoon at the park with a picnic of sandwiches, salad, and wine. Make your girlfriend or boyfriend a card and just spend the day together. Again, it will be obvious you put more effort into it then just going to the local florist and ordering flowers to be delivered to the home at an unknown time.

Step 3Make something! The reason most people don't follow this step is that it is the most difficult. Ironically, it is also the most budget sensitive. Create your own poem, or if you sing and play an instrument -- create a song!

Step 4Avoid Valentine's Day packages from your local florist or online store. They will attempt to sell you a teddy bear, bouquet of roses and a box of 'no name' chocolate for twice the price of buying all those things separately. Also, do not fall for the gifts that deliver one thing to your sweetie for an entire week. Not only do you have to worry about someone being home for those amount of days, it can also get annoying after awhile.

SADC NGO's pressure Malawi on gay couple

About thirty-five Southern African non-governmental organizations want arrested gay couple Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza released without condition. The NGOs argue the arrest and trial on suspected homosexuality compromises the fight against HIV/AIDS and mostly violates fundamental rights.
Under sections 153 and 156 of the Penal Code, homosexuality is against the laws of Malawi.

“These laws must be repealed as they are discriminatory,” said the NGO’s umbrella body, Aids and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa.

Last week Malawi’s lawmakers meeting in the capital Lilongwe bashed European parliamentarians of trying to work against the enshrined laws of a sovereign state. Leader of the Parliamentary group on legal affairs challenged the British and Scottish chambers not to enforce their moral and cultural belief on the people of Malawi.

The House of Commons Early Day Motion (EDM 564) moved that the arrest of the two has already caused the couple abuse, humiliation and violence while being held at Chichiri Prison in Blantyre City. Medical and psychological reports indicate Chimbalanga is a man and not a woman, and is mentally stable after examinations.

Earlier, Minister of Information and Civic Education, Honourable Ledford Thotho said no matter what happens, Malawi was a sovereign state and homosexuality was an immoral and criminal act under the country’s laws. The religious and traditional leaders echoed his sentiments.

However, local NGOs have distanced themselves from being secretly funded by pro and anti gay organizations from western civil rights organizations.

The Evangelical Association of Malawi (ECM), through General Secretary Reverend Francis Mkandawire, said this was news to them and that Malawi’s moral and spiritual values should be respected under the laws.

In a different development, former advisor on Christian matters to President Bingu wa Mutharika, Reverend Malani Mtonga, expressed his group, Church Foundation for Integrity and Democracy (CFID), bent at promoting religious and democratic values, would see no problem in receiving aid to help the organization sensitize the masses on the evils of homosexuality.

“If there is a lobby with the same vision ready to fund, there is no problem to accept to pass on messages to the public,” he said.

AU chairman: USA is nonsense

There is no basis to form a United States of Africa (USA) when there is no unity among the various governments on the continent, stated the newly elected Africa Union Chairman Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika. He said it was "nonsense" to pursue that dream adding his predecessor Muammar Gaddafi pushed it too far.
“Why should we create one Africa when in our countries and our regional groupings we are not united? Libya is pushing these matters too much,” the Malawian president told the local press upon his arrival from the AU Summit in Ethiopia.

He added: “We all know why Gaddafi wants the formation of OAU now; it is because he wants to be the first leader. Some of us don’t like other things but we choose to be silent deliberately. We just look at other things when we know they are nonsense.”

Diplomatic row

Ahead of the Summit, a diplomatic row brewed over who was suitable to man the affairs of the AU. The Libyan leader’s backers, including their northern allies Tunisia, argue that the AU chairmanship – faced by a US$ 1.3bn deficit for its programmes – needs someone with demonstrable financial muscle like Kadhafi.

However, the Malawian President said the southern African country was qualified to lead the AU and that he was ready to take up the mantle. “The chairmanship of the African Union is rotational,” Mutharika told journalists before departing for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the summit at which he was earmarked to take over the chairmanship of the continental grouping from the Libyan leader, Kadhafi.

He said: “The Southern African region, through SADC (the Southern African Development Community), has elected Malawi and therefore we are looking forward to be nominated.”

West African giant Nigeria joined other countries to back the candidacy of Mutharika according to the Vanguard newspaper.

WelcomeZimbabwe_Kabutana
They stated that they have a right to freely participate in the reform process.

According to Assistant Inspector Chimani, the arrested women had already been released; he further apologized for arresting them, after he denied having knowledge of the situation.

Chimani revealed that the officers concerned did not know that they were WOZA members.

The women groups acknowledge the professionalism of the police, but call on the police officers to stop the arbitrary arrest of Zimbabweans.

WOZA was formed in 2003 as a women’s civic movement to press for better governance and social justice in that country.

Zambian scoops Face of Africa

face of africa 2010
Lukando has since been awarded a modeling contract with O Model Africa and US$50,000.

Meanwhile, the 2003 Miss Zambia Cynthia Kanema has challenged government to recognize Lukando just as they have recognized others who excelled in other fields.

Kanema said the winner deserves recognition from government and other stakeholders who appreciate modeling and fashion.

“I think it’s about time Zambia had something like that, I mean we are very proud of her, she seems like a lovely girl. She has done the whole country proud but more than that the modeling industry. Zambia is just beginning to make a breakthrough right now and Lukando is leading the way, so that’s really good.”

The Multichoice Zambia Public Relations Manager Marlon Kananda told AfricaNews that he expects the Zambian fashion and modeling industry to excel after the face of Africa triumph adding that he would like to see young people take part in reality shows such as Face of Africa which bring immense opportunities.

French aid worker Laurent Maurice was abducted by armed men on 9 November 2009 in the village of Kawa, some 20km (12 miles) from the border with Sudan, where the aid agency is supporting a primary health care center.

The Organization said in a press statement "Laurent Maurice is tired but appears to be in good health".

An ICRC spokesman was quoted by Reuters that the aid worker was now on his way to Sudan's capital Khartoum.

"The ICRC is relieved that Laurent is now free and happy that he will soon be back with his family and friends", the AFP news agency quoted Jordi Raich, the head of the ICRC's mission in Sudan.

"We would like to express our profound gratitude to all those who helped us in one way or another during his captivity," Raich added.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner confirmed the report.

Maurice, 37, had been in Chad for 10 months before his abduction.

Another French aid worker who was working for the ICRC, Gauthier Lefevre, was kidnapped in Darfur last October and still being held.

Attacks against aid workers are common phenomenon in eastern Chad.

Libyan Court frees Swiss businessman

A Libyan court has dropped a case against Swiss businessman Rashid Hamdani for alleged illegal business activities, his lawyer said on Sunday, a day after a colleague was fined over similar charges. Hamdani, who was also cleared last month of charges of overstaying his visa, was free to leave Libya where he has been stranded for one and a half years.
Hamdani
Hamdani and fellow countryman and businessman Max Goeldi have been entangled in a diplomatic row between Switzerland and Libya, which barred them from leaving the country since July 2008.

Goeldi was ordered on Saturday to pay an 800-dollar fine for illegal business activities. The pair were caught up in a row over the treatment in Switzerland of Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi's son Hannibal, who was detained briefly in Geneva with his wife when two hotel servants complained he had mistreated them.

Libya orders arms worth $1.8b from Russia

Libya has signed an arms deal with Russia worth $1.8 billion. Russian Information Agency, RIA Novosti, on Saturday quoted Prime Minister Vladimir Putin as saying, "Only yesterday (Friday) we signed a contract worth 1.3 billion euros ($1.8 billion) with the Libyan government, and it's not only for small arms."
Libya map
The weapons Libya is intending to purchase are not specified in the statement but a military-diplomatic source quoted by Reuters says Libya has ordered some 20 fighter planes and S-300PMU2 air defence systems, according to Reuters.

The source also says that Libya may acquire T-90S tanks, and modernize more than 140 T-72 tanks and other weapons.

The deal was signed after talks with Libyan defence minister, Major General Abu-Bakr Yunis Jabr, last week in Moscow.

It comes days after the Libyan Investment Authority bought enormous shares in the Hong Kong IPO of UC RUSAL, the world's biggest aluminium producer.

Ghana is second largest donor to Haiti

Ghana has been noted as the second highest donor to Haiti after Guyana based on donor countries' Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Details of financial aid and other assistance to the people of Haiti being tracked by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) which was released recently by the Data Blog indicates.

The Data blog which is hosted on the UK Guardian newspapers’ website and sourced to Relief Web has shown that contributions captured as at January 24, 2010 shows Guyana as the ‘most generous’ country in terms of its financial pledges when measured against the country’s GDP. The report indicated that Guyana is the third poorest country in the hemisphere, after Haiti and Nicaragua.

Haiti suffered a destructive earthquake recently which killed several thousands and injured many citizens leaving its people in distress needing help very badly.

Ghana made a donation of $3 million to the government and people of Haiti. The country also gave some cocoa products and medication.

Some Ghanaian organizations including musicians are also making efforts to raise money and relief items to help the people of Haiti. A Ghanaian charity, the Caring Kids International has launched a fundraising effort to raise $1 million for Haiti. On Saturday a representative of the group, a student, Len Kessie arrived in Haiti as part of the group’s efforts, according to the Ghanabusinessnews.com.

According to the released data the Guyana National Committee for Haiti Relief has raised close to $260 million.

A report by the Stabroek News said after Guyana and Ghana, Canada was third, followed by Sweden, Estonia, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Norway and Australia. The US was ranked as the country which has pledged the most cash to Haiti with a total of $168 million followed by Canada $131 million, Spain $45 million, UK $32 million, France $31M million, Sweden $23 million, Germany $20 million, Brazil $15 million, Australia $14 million and China $13 million.

Meanwhile, pressure is being mounted on Haiti’s creditors to write off the country’s debts.

Cameroon govt. regulates bush meat trade

Wildlife conservationists in Cameroon have said, protected species are more endangered than ever before in that country. Experts say the continuing popularity of wildlife meat, or bush meat, is encouraging armed poachers to gun down hundreds of thousands of animals. But the government has introduced new initiatives to halt the illegal trade.
heras_wildlife
From Cameroon’s hinterlands to the urban centers, vendors openly display smoked monkeys, gorillas, snakes, antelopes, crocodiles and more from the country’s receding forests. For several years, the lucrative trade in meat from wild animals has thrived, despite anti-poaching laws.

Conservation groups like the World Wide Fund for Nature and the World Conservation Society warn that at the current rate; critically endangered species will be completely wiped out over the next two decades.

Elvis Ngolle Ngolle, Cameroon’s Minister of Forests and Wildlife, said the situation is outrageous: “We see people selling bush meat everywhere, anywhere, in public places, along the roadsides. And it’s more or less putting a shame on our dignity and our commitment to fight illegal poaching.”

The government has worked aggressively to stop poachers. The Ministry of Forests and Wildlife has been working with the police, the army and conservation organizations to crack down on the trade.

The government has prohibited the transport of bush meat to markets on trains, timber trucks and pubic transportation. Also, a number of radio campaigns have been conducted to try to sensitize people to the importance of the issue. But observers say the campaigns have failed to stop the high demand for the meat.

Tons of it continues to reach the markets and enrich traders, who take advantage of the absence of security patrols in remote areas or bribe their ways through checkpoints.

Wildlife meat traders say the trade cannot be curbed until the government provides traders with other ways to earn a living.

One woman, who did not wish to be identified, said she is quite aware that bushmeat trade severely endangers protected animals. But she said that she needs the money from the business to send her children to school and buy medication. She has been the sole income earner in the family since her husband lost his job with a logging company last year, the result of the global economic crisis.

A conservation group, The Last Great Apes, or LAGA, says hunters armed with illegally owned high caliber rifles have formed networks to kill 3,000 gorillas, 400 chimpanzees and 4,000 elephants yearly for meat and ivory in Cameroon and neighboring countries.

Cameroon’s wildlife law dates back to 1994. It strictly prohibits the sale and trafficking of endangered species, with penalties ranging from fines of half a billion francs [about one million US dollars] to life imprisonment. But administrative red tape delayed the implementation of the law until six years ago, when the first violator was prosecuted and jailed.

Ever since, LAGA has been helping the government enforce the legislation. It uses undercover agents to track down illegal wildlife dealers and hand them over to prosecutors. Gradually, things are changing: an average two persons are arrested, fined or jailed every month for breaking the wildlife law.

The clampdown against unauthorized bush meat trade has entered another phase. Elvis Ngolle Ngolle says the government introduced a new program at the beginning of the year: “Bush meat should only be sold in Cameroon in markets or public places that have been designated by local authorities.

That way our eco-guards will be able to move around to ensure that any meat which is not sold in designated markets will be considered illegal,” he said.

The bush meat that will be legal to sell includes species that are not endangered including cane rats. The government will penalize anyone who sells meats from elephants, monkeys and other protected animals.

Other idea being considered by the government and partner conservation organizations include the creation of farms to breed wild animals, like cane rats and porcupines, for sale. They also propose working with traditional chiefs and their subjects to protect threatened flora and fauna.

The government is also recruiting, training and better arming forest guards to make them more effective. And it’s working to provide other jobs for bush meat traders in farming, including in the development of cocoa and coffee plantations.

Jacob Juma says sorry

President Jacob Zuma has apologized to the nation for fathering a child out of wedlock with the daughter of soccer boss Irvin Khoza. There is great danger the scandal would overshadow his state of the nation speech on Thursday evening amid accusations that his administration is in a state of torpor.
Jacob Zuma
After vigorously defending himself, Zuma bowed to pressure at the weekend and apologized - his second apology in recent years for similar acts.

Ruling African National Congress officials are due this week to commemorate the 20th anniversary of former president Nelson Mandela's release from prison at various ceremonies in the Western Cape, culminating in Zuma's state of the nation speech on the actual day Mandela was freed in 1990.

Resignation

Meanwhile, the opposition Congress of the People (COPE) has called for the resignation of the president to save the face of South Africa.

Mbhazima Shilowa, the deputy president of the COPE, said on Monday that the party would move for a motion of no confidence in President Zuma when Parliament resumed this week.

"We derive no pleasure from dealing with this matter. Ours is not about the humiliation of the president of the Republic," he told a media briefing after a meeting of the party's top brass at the weekend.

Shilowa said the motion would be called because of the impact of Zuma's behaviour on the country. The focus of the entire country was on Zuma due to his indiscretion when it should be on the issues that ordinary South Africans faced, such as unemployment, poverty and HIV/Aids.

Cope general secretary Charlotte Lobe said South Africa had become a "laughing stock" internationally because Zuma "failed to heed his own government's call on the pandemic".

She was referring to the HIV/Aids pandemic and said Zuma had not adhered to the government's programme on abstinence, being faithful and using condoms.

"His sexual advances to the children of his friends... go to the heart of his moral bankruptcy," said Lobe.

"President Jacob Zuma is not fit for office. He has tarnished the image of the Republic."

How to Star in a Reality Show

Ten years ago, the only reality show on the tube was MTV's "The Real World." Groundbreaking at the time, its success has since been heavily cloned. Whether it's "The Amazing Race," "Hell's Kitchen," "Top Chef" or a spate of others--reality shows are television's version of "the old woman who lived in a shoe who had so many kids she didn't know what to do." They're everywhere!

Relative to their one-hour drama counterparts, they're cheap to produce with no fussy actors to keep happy. Translation: reality shows are here to stay. Which means for those attention-centric souls--there will be more and more opportunities to share your antics with the viewing public.

And although everyone may remember Andy Warhol's now cliché: "In the future, everybody will be world famous for 15 minutes," I prefer Don Williams, Jr.'s: "Fame and riches are fleeting. Stupidity is forever." Once on tape, you are immortal, but is it really what you want metaphorically engraved on your tombstone? The rewards are few, the risks great, but if you want to see yourself plastered on the small screen--read on.

How to Make a Reality Show Submission Video
Reality show casting directors are always looking for the next star when they view reality show submission videos. To get noticed, you have to have the look, the attitude and the talent. Instead of flying somewhere to go to a casting call for the next reality show, make your own reality show submission video following these easy steps.

Follow the technical guidelines for submitting your reality show submission video. Read the submission video directions carefully. Record your audition on the correct format (DVD or VHS). Also, make sure that your video fits within the time parameters specified for the video.

Step 2

Find a video recorder to use. Learn how to use it. If you don't have a video recorder, then borrow or rent one. Enlist a friend's help to record yourself if you don't think you can handle it on your own.

Step 3

Set the stage for your video, making sure that there is nothing distracting or unpleasant in the background. Make sure that there will not be any background noise while you are recording your video. You want the casting director's eyes to be on you and only you when watching your video.

Step 4

Get the look for your video by wearing nice clothes without any logos or busy patterns. Make sure that your hair and makeup look great by checking yourself in the mirror right before you start recording.

Step 5

Be yourself while making your video. The honest and direct approach is best. Speak about yourself and why you think you would make a good reality star.

Step 6

Show your talent if the reality show is talent-driven. Show some attitude if it is a social experiment-type reality show.

Step 7

Submit your video by the deadline to the address listed in the video submission guidelines. Follow all rules concerning mailing and packaging.

How to Apply for a Reality Show

#
Step 1

SO HOW DO YOU MAKE IT ON A REALITY SHOW? HERE'S THE FIRST STEPS.
1. Search for on-line surveys (introducing a new reality show) on your favorite network's website or any network's website, for that matter.

They will usually post a bulletin on the main page of the site. It will say something like "Do You Have a Phobia? Does it interfere with your life?" or "XYZ is looking for contestants to participate in an exciting new reality show..." or "Have you ever wondered 'What If?'" It will be something catchy that will attract your attention. The reason they do this is because they are trying to determine what kind of response they're going to get. Or, a production company is trying to 'pitch' the show to the network and they want to see what kind of interest they can stir up with their particular idea. They will usually display a 'response' box where you can type in your answer. Remember, if you stumble upon one like this, YOUR RESPONSE NEEDS TO ATTRACT THEIR ATTENTION. Type in a quick, to the point, description of why you are responding, or whatever they are asking for. If you're a good writer, that's a plus. Just type it in like you were talking to them on the phone, exactly like you actually talk in converstation. Don't worry about using big words to impress, just BE YOURSELF. Then click 'send'.
#
Step 2

2. Go to an open casting call.
Chances are, you already have a favorite show and you've been sending audition tapes for every season. Let me tell you something. Now, I don't know this for sure, but considering the amount of tapes they receive, I don't see how Casting can look at every single video that's sent in. Check the website closely and see if they give information on open casting calls, which are usually held in major cities across the U.S. Sometimes, though, a local radio or television station may send out a local 'casting call' to apply for a particular show. If you have the resources and time to attend an open casting call, especially if it's advertised directly by the network itself, GO! Here's why. It will give you a chance to meet, face to face, with casting agents. They're going to be looking for your response, watching your expression, and especially checking out your personality. Oh, and of course, looks count, but it doesn't take a Dolly Parton or Tom Cruise look-alike to get on a reality show. Depending on the content of the show, they usually want everyday people, just like you and me. Weird people, shy people, outgoing people; you never know what they want. Just be yourself, answer questions directly, look them in the eye, and don't over-do it!
#
Step 3

3. Go ahead and send in that audition tape.
Multiple tapes, if necessary. That is, if you can afford the cost. It doesn't hurt your chances a bit. Even if the casting agents don't look at all the tapes, maybe, just maybe, they will pick up your tape and watch it. I don't know if they read the applications first, or if they pop in the video first. Regardless, just send them. In addition, follow the directions on the application EXACTLY. Don't miss anything. Most reality show applications are the same format, but each has exclusive directions. So read carefully. Be direct, and get creative with that video! But remember, they aren't always looking for 'perfection', or some outlandish display. Mine was down-to-earth. I didn't even think it was that good! But I just acted like MYSELF, and they liked it! I spoke to the camcorder like I was talking to an individual about a particular subject, something I felt strongly about.
#
Step 4

4.Search for Ads from Placement Agencies.
Personally, I don't know how well these agencies actually do with placing an individual on a reality show, but I've run across many who claim to publish your photo and information directly to casting agents looking for contestants. You'll usually find these on your major Reality Show Websites.
There's lots of these websites out there. Use your Google OR BING Search engine or go to http://hubpages.com/hub/RealityShowSelectionTips for added links.
NOTE: these placement agencies usually ask for a fee to list you Bio information, so be selective in choosing who you actually go with!
#
Step 5

5. When you get the phone call.
Okay, now is your chance! Once you get the call, you've usually made it to the semi-finals. You've got to get it together and be enthusiastic. Don't hesitate, just answer the questions they ask. The agent will be bubbly and project an air of real interest in you that will make you feel really important. When I got the first call, I was totally unprepared, but when I realized who I was actually talking to, my adrenlin started pumping! I was really animated with my responses (it's part of my personality, maybe not yours) and she loved it. It only took her a few minutes to say "You're funny! This is what I need you to do...send me a 3 minute video tape.....blah blah blah". And that was it. If the agent requests a tape, application, or anything else, just say "sure" and get it done. The agent will try to create a sense of urgency to get it sent fast, so try not to stress too much. It's their job.

Step 6

6. If you make it to the finals.
This could be your big break. Once you get to the Casting Department, you're going to be feeling pretty darned important. So stay cool, be yourself, and ask lots of questions. I drove the Casting Director's assistant crazy with all my questions. I wanted to find out exactly how they find contestants, what they are looking for, etc. She told me that they received thousands of responses to the original 'teaser survey' they put on the home page of the network's website. It was the type survey I spoke of in 1, above. She said they read thousands of submissions, so I asked her "what made you pick mine?" And she said it was the way it was written, it stood out (I guess cause I did it spontaneously). Then, the Casting Agent liked my response on the phone (enthusiasm). During the taped interviews at the Finals, I was animated, upbeat, and very descriptive when asked questions about my life. So, if you make it this far, your chances are really good.

Additional Notes:

Remember the majic words when applying for a reality show:

Enthusiasm, Originality, Spontaneity.
