PRESS STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO THE STORY CARRIED IN THE MALAWI NEWS OF 31ST OCTOBER 2015 HEADLINED; “OBSESSION WITH JET TRAVEL.”

The Malawi government has learnt with shock and disappointment through an article in the Malawi News dated 31st October, 2015 that His Excellency the State President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and his government have plans to purchase another Presidential Jet once the economy is back on track.

The article on the front page of the Malawi News quoting Presidential Press Secretary Mr. Gerald Viola, alleges that it is the wish of the Mutharika administration to procure another presidential jet once the country’s economy is back on track.

The Malawi government would like to clarify and dismiss the article in its entirety as follows;

Neither the State President nor any Ministry or any government agencies have these alleged plans to procure any presidential jet now or in future.
The State President’s commitment in exercising financial prudence and cutting down on unnecessary expenditure remains as ever before.
Malawi Government wishes to inform all Malawians that it is the State President that makes appointments through a process that involves submission of at least three proposed names to a position complete with CVs by the Chief Secretary from which His Excellency makes the appointments after thorough scrutiny of the individuals.
The government of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika remains committed in supporting the freedom of the press.

HON. JAPPIE MHANGO, MP.
