PRESS RELEASE N0. 07/ 2013
THE AFRICAN UNION SADDENED BY THE DEATH OF 68 AFTER HEAVY RAINS IN MOZAMBIQUE
The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, on February 4 received with great shock and sadness the death of some 68 Mozambicans after recent heavy rains in Northern and Central Mozambique, which have affected 350,000 people and displaced nearly 170,000.
The floods, which have also hit neighboring South Africa and Zimbabwe, are the result of days of torrential rains that swelled the Limpopo River.
Dr. Dlamini-Zuma is very concerned by the shortage of food for flood victims and commends all the various relief initiatives underway.
She further calls upon the international community to assist the Mozambican government in its effort to put in place structures for managing and mitigating the floods impacts.
